What is Teej?

Teej, also known as Haritalika Teej, is one of the biggest festivals in Nepal. Often occurring around August and September, this festival lasts for three days and is celebrated by women all over Nepal. This year,Haritalika Teej occurs on September 9th, 2021. Women dress in intricate red sarees, tika, chura– they sing and dance to folk music for days until the day of Teej itself. Traditionally, married women get invited by their тАШmaiti gharтАЩ, their maternal home to rest and feast. Due to this being a significant festival for Nepali Shivaites, hundreds of women gather at the Pashupatinath temple and other temples dedicated to Shiva and Parvati in order to pray on the day of the celebration.

Religious Significance and History

The main significance of this religious holiday is to pay homage and ask lord Shiva for special blessings on their marriage– including their husbandтАЩs long, healthy and good life.

Teej is dedicated to the union of Parvati and Shiva, who is considered to be the symbol of marriage. Parvati and Shiva by many Nepali Hindus are considered to be the ideal husband and wife. Legend has it that on the day of Haritalika Teej, Parvati is incarnated as Shailaputri, the manifestation of the goddess Durga, another highly venerated deity in Nepali Hinduism.

The Story behind the name тАЬHartalika TeejтАЭ

Hartalika is a combination of two words тАЬharitтАЭ and тАЬaalikaтАЭ. Harit means тАЬabductionтАЭ, and aalika means тАЬfemale friendтАЭ.

As the story goes, Parvati made a Shiva lingam out of her hair and prayed to Shiva. This impressed Shiva and he married Parvati. In order for Parvati to be able to marry Shiva, her female friend тАШaalikaтАЩ, had to abduct her тАШharitтАЩ. Therefore, this day is referred to as Hartalika Teej.

Dar Khane Din

The day before the second day of Teej, women are invited to their maternal home where they engage in a large feast called тАЬDarтАЭ. Women dance and feast and indulge in their merriment. Traditionally, men do not partake in the festivities, instead, they are the ones who host the feast for the women. Women do not do any work and chores during the day of dar, it is a day for them to dress up lavishly, embellish themselves, eat good food, and dance before the day of the fast. Along with jolly and happy music, women also sing and dance about their pains and the struggles of womanhood. This feast and celebration last until midnight, and then the fast begins.

The Day of Fast

On the second day of Teej, women fast. Some women do not eat or drink anything at all, whereas others allow fruit and water. Fasting is not strictly for married women, unmarried women also participate in the fast. Traditionally, it is believed that fasting shows their devotion and loyalties to God. They believe that Shiva will be pleased by his devotees and that their marriage will be blessed. Unmarried women fast with the hopes that they will be blessed with a good husband.

On this day, women visit Shiva mandirs dancing and singing on their way to pray and offer fruits, coins, flowers, etc. to Shiva and Parvati. Pashupati mandir annually records the highest number of devotees on this day. The oil lamp which gets lit during prayer should be lit all throughout the night. It is believed that this light will bring prosperity into the lives of their husband and family.

The Final Day

The last day of Teej is known as Rishi Panchami. On the final day of this three-day festival, women offer food, money and other supplies to seven saints. Traditionally, they bathe in red mud and brush their teeth with datiwan. This is believed to purify the soul and body. Women participate in ritual bathing and puja.

Teej Songs

One major and notable part of the Teej festival is the songs and music of choice. Traditionally, these songs were used to reiterate and emphasize the roles of Nepali women in traditional Hindu piety– subservient, submissive, and loyal to their husbands. These songs reinforced religious ideologies and gender norms. However, with the progression and rapid development of Nepali society, songs are now centered around women, feminism, their struggles, and critique about the condition of women in the country. Teej songs have emerged as a way to give voice to nepali women.

Our lives have changed since the COVID-19 pandemic started. In this video, we talked to our community members from different walks of life and listened to their struggles, fears, and hopes with the onset of the COVID-19 vaccines. We also talked to some health professionals about the effect of COVID-19 vaccines, how it affects us, and what we should do even after being vaccinated.

Namaste,

This past year has been hard, to say the least. We have been told to be cautious and to wear masks, keeping ourselves six feet away from people, and for a social community like ours, this has been even harder.

The pandemic has brought adversities such as unemployment, delay in education, loss of businesses, and for some of us the loss of our loved ones.

We have had to live in fear thinking about how we might contract the COVID-19 virus. The cloud of mixed emotions of frustration and uncertainty have made our lives difficult. Some of us have been severely affected by this pandemic and have contracted the COVID-19 virus. Yet, we as a community have stayed strong and have persevered.

We became hopeful again when we became eligible for the COVID-19 vaccine. For us, the vaccine has become our hope of survival, the hope of finally being with our loved ones, the hope of getting back to our businesses, and the happiness of resuming our somewhat normal lives.

Slowly, businesses have started to remove their тАЬCLOSEDтАЭ signs from their front door and schools are starting to reopen.

Most of us have been vaccinated now and weтАЩve noticed that things are starting to resume. Now, we have faith that things may get better.

Although the fear of getting the COVID-19 virus has subsided, we still must continue to take precautions. All of us are still not vaccinated. Therefore, we urge you to be proactive as prevention is better than cure! You are not alone in this and we are here to help you.

Together, we can be a healthy, thriving community.

If you or someone you know have any questions about the COVID-19 and/or COVID-19 vaccine, please contact us at [email protected]. We will reach out to our Nepali health professionals and try to get an answer to you at our best capacity.

After a long behind the scene preparation happening since November 2020 the day was finally here! Nepal Seattle Society and Seattle Football club were able to welcome our Nepalese youth to its inaugural soccer camp at Woodinville Sports Fields. This camp is designed for kids between the ages of 5 to 16. The camp will run for 14 sessions, every Sunday from 9-11 am PST through September 5th, 2021.  A whopping 46 kids from our community have already signed up for this event!

Parents could be seen observing training and socializing on the side lines.

Our first-day turnout was quite impressive. A total of 33 kids participated alongside their parents. A tent was set up for the parents to check in on their campers and to complete the required waiver forms. Once the campers started to settle in, Anish Thapa (NSS Sports Committee Member) welcomed the parents and campers with a short introductory speech. The campers were organized into four different groups and assigned their respective coaches as follows:

Group 1: Sagarmatha (Age: 5-7 – Girls): Coach: Sophie Reingold, Rabi Tamrakar

Group 2: Dhaulagiri (Age: 5-7 – Boys): Coach: Lhakpa Sherpa

Group 3: Annapurna (Age: 8-11): Coach: Aditya Chhetri, Pemba Sherpa, Sabin Gurung

Group 4: Macchapuchhre (Age: 12-16): Coach: Prabat Limbu, Nabin KC, Suresh Pun

Another of our committee members/coach, Pramoj Adhikari, was seen assisting the coaches with setting up the equipment and coordinating the events. Most of our coaches have been trained from the US Soccer Learning Center and are certified as grassroots coaches. Three other coaches (Surya Lama Tamang, Sachin Gurung, and Bhim Thapa) will be joining us as the camp progresses.

Parents assisting with equipment setup .

The campers were full of enthusiasm and high energy as they could be seen excitedly participating in their drills and challenges. Even the soccer dads got into their action on the adjacent field participating in an impromptu 8v8 match! Other parents could be seen observing the training and were socializing on the sidelines. It was easy to notice how relieved people were to be outside on this typical Pacific NorthWest cool and calm morning especially after a long COVID lethargy now followed by the summer vacation.

It was well organized. Have not been to any soccer training. However, it felt like you guys managed well. We were excited to see kids enjoying themselves. They did not want to come home even after the training was over. Excited to see them on the field every Sunday :),

Feedback from one of the parents, Mr. Sanjay.

Thanks to the hard work and coordination of all of our volunteering coaches and committee members, we got to see the smiling faces of kids and the gratitude of their parents.

Nepal Rising has been actively involved in mitigating critical issues in Nepal. Recently, with the rampant rise of COVID-19 cases and lack for healthcare infrastructure, Nepal Rising has started a fundraiser to immediately provide much needed relief. You can visit their fundraiser page and read more about their current efforts.

https://nepalrising.org/covid-wave2

Help us provide 400 critically ill patients with life-saving oxygen in Nepal

The second wave of COVID-19 virus has struck Nepal with deadly force. Every day, more than 7,000 new cases are reported and the death toll is growing. With less than 1,500 ICU beds and 600 ventilators currently available to service a population of nearly 30 million people, the health system is already overwhelmed. Hospitals are already turning patients away due to a lack of bed space and oxygen. The government estimates that an additional 48,000 cylinders are needed to meet the current demand.

Local community-driven isolation centers are providing a critical link in the frayed health-care system in Nepal. Covid patients needing oxygen are kept under supervision of a doctor until a hospital bed is available, buying precious time for patients battling Covid.

Nepal Rising is working with CoVID Alliance for Nepal, non-profit CREASION and other grassroots partners on the ground to support community isolation centers and hospitals requiring oxygen concentrators and cylinders.

We have only 2 weeks to get 100 life-saving oxygen cylinders to critical Covid patients in Nepal

You can help us obtain critical oxygen and save lives.

Rajesh Shrestha, an active member of Nepal Rising , Seattle is also a member of Nepali Community Health Board.

Nepal Seattle Society, along with other local Nepali organizations, has submitted a letter of plea to WA senators to facilitate COVID-19 vaccine, medical equipment & supplies relief aid for Nepal. We, the residents of WA state, are fortunate enough to have medical resources and vaccines available to us. However, as we have come to know via media and first hand experience, the situation in Nepal is dire because of rampant rise in COVID-19 cases.

Time is of essence, money alone canтАЩt solve the problem, and we need to mobilize local professionals and local leaders with basic equipment like oximeters, thermometer and oxygen concentrators. Local professionals like Biomedical Engineers can fix the non- functional oxygen plants and ventilators in the health care facilities. But international development partners including UN agencies who are working are not able to mobilize these local resources and are not able to procure those minor equipment and supplies on time simply because of their complex procurement policies.тАЭ

Voice of a local development professional from Nepal.

Per the World Health Organization, today, on May 11, the COVID-19 positivity rate in Nepal is 44% with reported new 9,483 cases and 250 deaths. Some heart-wrenching statistics:

  • Nepal has the fastest infection rate in South Asia, faster than even India; the daily average rate of infection in the last 7 days is a staggering 30 per 100,000 people (compared to 28 in India) according to John Hopkins University
  • More than 404,000 people in Nepal have tested positive, overwhelming the hospitals and health service system that are turning away critical patients
  • Severe shortage of oxygen supply, resulting in increasing daily deaths
  • 600 ventilators for the entire country, and the UWтАЩs Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation predicts that Nepal will need over 10,000 ventilators by May 24
  • Less than 2,000 ICU beds for the entire country with a scarcity of beds for patients
  • Only about 1% of the country has received vaccines against COVID-19 thus far

Hence, we collectively request our representatives to do their best to provide urgent aid to Nepal. The letter sent to our representatives can be found below:

Who is eligible for vaccination ?

WASHINGTON COVID-19 Vaccine Eligibility is now all ages 16 and older . Please follow this link for more information about vaccine prioritization guidance and allocation framework : https://www.doh.wa.gov/Portals/1/Documents/1600/coronavirus/SummaryInterimVaccineAllocationPriortization.pdf

How do I schedule a vaccination appointment ?

To schedule your COVID-19 vaccine, please follow this link : https://vaccinelocator.doh.wa.gov/ . So far, more than 5 million doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been administered in the state of Washington. We are in the right path to have a good percentage of vaccinated population which will help us get back to our normal lives soon.

When are you considered fully vaccinated ?

People are considered fully vaccinated тЙе2 weeks after they have received the second dose in a 2-dose series (Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna), or тЙе2 weeks after they have received a single-dose vaccine (Johnson and Johnson (J&J)/Janssen).

Even you┬аare fully vaccinated, you still need to take precautions.┬аHere’s a quick guide from the CDC for the use of masks and your activities based on your COVID-19 vaccine status:┬аhttps://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/vaccines/pdfs/324153_choosingSaferActivities11.pdf

What do we know about Johnson & Johnson vaccine ?

The Washington State Department of Health (DOH)┬а resumes use of the Johnson & Johnson (J&J) vaccine across the state. This decision is based on recommendations from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the Western States Scientific Safety Review Workgroup, as well as careful consideration and close review by DOH.

Facts and Myths about COVID-19 Vaccine

DOH has shared COVID-19 Vaccine facts as part of ongoing efforts to dispel rumors and provide factual information:

  • You should still get the vaccine even if you already had COVID-19.
  • The vaccine will not make you sick with COVID-19.┬аThere are three COVID-19 vaccines that are authorized for emergency use in the United States. None of them contain a live form of the virus that causes COVID-19.┬а
  • It is normal to have side effects after getting the COVID-19 vaccine. The most common side effects are a sore arm, fatigue, headache, and muscle pain. These usually last a day or two after you get the shot. Side effects are a sign that the vaccine is working.
  • There are no microchips or any other tracking devices in COVID-19 vaccines тАФ or any others. Vaccines do not track people or collect any personal information. Any claims about microchips or tracking devices are simply myths from science fiction stories.
  • There are no home remedies that can prevent or cure COVID-19.
  • The best way to protect yourself from COVID-19 is to get the vaccine. You should also follow other coronavirus guidelines like washing your hands, wearing a mask, and staying away from others.
  • If you have COVID-19, talk to your provider about managing your symptoms. And stay home тАФ except to get a test or medical care.┬а

Please contact any Nepal Seattle┬аSociety volunteers or email us┬аif you need help on COVID-19 vaccines and related issues.┬аWe will do our best to provide the most up to date info.

April.25.2021

On April 25th 2021, we collaborated with Gurudwara Singh Savha of Washington along with Health Point and Public Health Seattle & King County. We were honored to be part of event hosted by Gurudwara this weekend in their Renton location.

One of our community members getting Pfizer vaccination.

The main goal of the event was to get as many people as possible to get their first dose of Coronavirus vaccine. The place was very organized and there were lots of volunteer making the process as smooth as possible for people who signed up to get their vaccines. We were able to reschedule many people for their second dose as well. We were really happy to see younger generation taking advantage of this opportunities sooner.

Our volunteers were available to help with translation and data collection.

We had about 55 people who came by just from our community. We continue to spread the words through social media and word of mouth. As a volunteer we were able to help not just our community but also be able to help other community as well. All of the volunteer did an amazing job, and all of our end goals was to get as many people vaccinated as possible and end this pandemic together.

We’d like to thank all the organizations and individuals who worked tirelessly to make this event successful. We couldn’t have done it without you! Thank you!

Volunteers and participants during COVID-19 vaccination camp at Gurudwara.

Currently City of Seattle is only vaccinating people who have not received a first dose. These sites offer the Moderna and Pfizer COVID-19 vaccines. The Moderna and Pfizer vaccines are not interchangeable.

The Moderna vaccine is only for patients 18 years-old or older. The Pfizer vaccine is only for patients 16 years-old or older.

We understand that there are many questions regarding the COVID vaccines. We highly encourage people who are qualified to get COVID vaccines to make an appointment and get the vaccine. The more we get vaccinated, the better will be our chance to recover from this pandemic and return to our normal life. In order to clear any question or doubt about the vaccine, please read the information in the pdf below.

Vaccine-Safety_What-to-Know

If you still have any question or concern about Covid-19 vaccination, please feel free to contact us at [email protected] and we will do our best to find an answer from a subject matter expert.

Thank you,
Nepal Seattle Society

Namaste, recently CDC has blocked distribution and application of J&J vaccine until further notice. We have received some information from Department of Health about this issue. Please read the PDF below to know more about current development with J&J vaccine.

FAQтАЩS FOR TEMPORARY PAUSE ON J&J VACCINE USE April 13, 2021
Prepared by Julie Grauert, Department of Health

_________________________________________________________________

WHY ARE J&J VACCINES BEING PAUSED?

On Tuesday, April 13th, the FDA/CDC announced a rare but serious side effect including serious brain blood clots (CVST) combined with low platelet counts in six patients who received J&J vaccines.

  • All patients are women under 50 years of age.
  • Vaccines are being paused out of an abundance of caution.

WHAT IS WA STATE DOING ABOUT J&J VACCINES?

тАв The Washington State Department of Health will pause the use of the Johnson & Johnson (J & J) vaccine statewide starting immediately (4/13/21), following the guidance of the FDA/CDC.
тАв Use of that vaccine will be put on hold until we receive further recommendations from our federal partners about how best to move forward.Safety is the highest priority when it comes to all COVID-19 vaccines.

About 160,000 doses of J & J vaccine have been administered in Washington so far, out of more than four million doses total.

тАв At this time, we are not aware that any of the six patients who experienced these blood clots were Washington residents.

WILL J&J CAUSE ME TO HAVE A BLOOD CLOT?

тАв тАв

While adverse events such as blood clots are very unfortunate, it is important to remember that out of

6.8 million J & J vaccines administered nationwide, only six people are known to have experienced this side

effect.

That is a fraction of a percent, which shows us that this side effect, while serious, is extremely rare.

тАв For comparison:

o 1 in 366 people will have a car accident during a 1000 mile trip (Source: Dr. Lindquist in media availability on 4/13)
o 1 in 10,000 people will have side effects to popular antibiotics (Source: Dr. Lindquist in media availability on 4/13)

o Fewer than 1 in 1 million people will develop a blood clot from J&J vaccine.

WHAT HAPPENS IF I RECEIVED THE J&J VACCINE?

тАв People who have received the J&J vaccine who develop severe headache, abdominal pain, leg pain, or shortness of breath within three weeks after vaccination should contact their health care provider.
тАв Health care providers are asked to report adverse events to the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System at https://vaers.hhs.gov/reportevent.html.

WHAT PEOPLE WITH J&J APPOINTMENTS SHOULD DO:

тАв If you have an appointment with a clinic that was scheduling the J&J vaccine, those clinics will be putting information out on their own channels to advise you of next steps.
тАв DOH was already seeing low dose allocation of J&J vaccine.

o Anticipated only 13k of 370k expected doses to be J&J.
o J&J is only 6% of the total vaccine received by Washington State.

  • Because J&J was already in limited supply, pausing J&J vaccines should have minimal effect.
  • We acknowledge that any cancelations or rescheduling due to the pause is an inconvenience and disruption, but itтАЩs the right thing to do until we get more information on the vaccine.

IF YOU THINK YOU ARE HAVING SIDE EFFECTS:

тАв Contact your health care provider if you are having the following symptoms within 3 weeks of receiving vaccine:

o Severe headache
o Abdominal pain
o Leg Pain
o Shortness of breath

WHAT IS CAUSING THE BLOOD CLOTS

тАв No definitive cause has been identified yet, but the FDA says that a that a probable cause is a rare immune response generated by an individual after receiving the vaccine.
тАв Dr. Scott Lindquist, Acting State Health Officer, says that the 6 reported blood clots with J&J are associated with vaccine, however they not caused by the vaccine.

OVERALL J&J DATA (From Michele Roberts, as of 4/12/21)

тАв 320,000 J&J delivered in WA (state and federal allocations) o 225,000 of that is from our state allocation

  • As of April 11, 2021: 160,000 administered and reported to the IIS as of 4/11
  • 650 facilities have administered or been allocated J&J vaccine in WA
  • These numbers will continue to change as more administration data comes in from last few days and doses continued to be delivered.

WHAT HAPPENS TO UNDELIVERED J&J DOSES?

тАв DOH is directing providers to hold onto undelivered doses for now.

WHAT WEтАЩRE TELLING PROVIDERS TO DO

тАв Discontinue all use of J&J until further review.

If you have any further question about J&J vaccine or COVID-19 vaccination in general, please email us at [email protected] and we will do our best to get you an answer.

Dhanyabaad.
