May 4, 2007 - Faces of Hope: A
film screening by Crooked Trails
Faces of Hope: A film
screening of the documentary- The Day My God Died. A
fundraiser to combat child sexual slavery
May 4th, at The Mary Gates Hall at UW Campus Seattle.
7-9pm doors open at 6:30, Cost: $10.00
Fees benefit Maiti Nepal-an orphanage that rescues girls
from lives in sexual slavery. Presented by Crooked
Trails
The Day My God Died is a feature-length documentary that
presents the stories of young girls whose lives have
been shattered by the child sex trade. They describe the
day they were abducted from their village and sold into
sexual servitude as, ?The Day My God Died.?
The film provides actual footage from the brothels of
Bombay, known even to tourists as ?The Cages,? captured
with ?spy camera? technology. It weaves the stories of
girls, and their stolen hopes and dreams, into an
unforgettable examination of the growing plague of child
sex slavery.
Through the film we come to know victims such as Gina,
sold into sex slavery at age 7 and beaten with sticks
and aluminum rods. Anita, lured by a friend then drugged
and sold at age 12, was beaten and threatened that she
would be buried alive. Girls are gang-raped, beaten and
forced to service up to 20 clients a day as they are
held in perpetual sexual servitude.
The film also introduces us to the heroes of the
movement to abolish child sex slavery ? non-profit
organizations which rescue and care for former sex
slaves. Some victims have emerged to form their own
underground railway out of slavery. Maili, trafficked at
19 along with her infant daughter, risks her life to
help other girls. We see Jyoti, sold at age 12, lead a
raid on a brothel resulting in the rescue of seven girls
and the arrest of two brothel owners.
Children are the commodity consumed by the voracious and
sophisticated international sex trade. Recruiters
capture them, smugglers transport them, brothel owners
enslave them, corrupt police betray them and customers
rape and infect them. Every person in the chain profits
except for the girls, who pay the price with their
lives. Sexual servitude is a virtual death sentence. In
Bombay alone, 90 new cases of HIV are reported every
hour and the girls suffer an 80% HIV/AIDS infection
rate.
The Day My God Died documents the tragedy of child
sexual slavery and profiles the courageous abolitionists
that need our support. This event is presented by
Crooked Trails, a Seattle based non-profit tourism
organization founded by two Seattle women who believe in
improving the ecological, cultural and economic
conditions around the world by changing the way people
travel. Visit us at

Crooked Trails thanks the University Of Washington
Carlson Leadership & Public Service Center for their
sponsorship of this event.

PRESS RELEASE
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Faces of Hope: A fundraiser to combat child sexual
slavery in Asia
SEATTLE, WA ? One day in Nepal, a seven-year-old girl is
given a coke from a friendly stranger at a festival. The
next day she awakens to beatings in a grimy brothel in
Bombay. If she does not submit to a life of sexual
slavery, she will simply disappear. Yet choosing life
means an existence of exploitation, torture, disease and
despair. As one victim sums it up, ?The day I was sold
into slavery was the day my god died.?
Within this human tragedy, we invite you to look at the
faces of hope. On Thursday, August 17th at 7:00 p.m.
Crooked Trails will sponsor a movie screening and photo
exhibition fundraiser. The Emmy award nominated film The
Day My God Died profiles the work of Maiti Nepal, an
extraordinary group working to rescue and rehabilitate
victims of trafficking. Local photographer Jeff Speigner
will show images of children living out brighter futures
at the House of Joy orphanage in Northern Thailand. All
proceeds from the event will go to organizations in
Nepal and Thailand that are on the front lines combating
child trafficking.
The U.N. reports that 2,500 innocent women and children
are sold into the living hell of sexual slavery every
day. The price for their lives, collected by someone
they?ve trusted, is usually less than $1000. The dreams
of a daughter, a sister, a son, a brother - sold.
Admission is $20 and may be reserved in advance by
calling (206) 372-4405 or by emailing
angela@crookedtrails.com .
This event is proudly sponsored by Crooked Trails, with
donations from Cascade Trade and Starbuck?s. All
proceeds will go to Maiti Nepal and Thailand?s House of
Joy.
